1948 Olds Super
Trumpet - Los Angeles Model
This is a very nice vintage Olds LA Studio Trumpet built in 1948 in the original Los Angeles plant in California. The serial number 21797 indicates a manufacture date in 1948 when the Olds company was doing some of it's best work at the original Los Angeles plant. The Olds Super was considered a professional model trumpet and a step under the Recording model, the top of the line. And, then there was the Super Recording which only differs from this one by having a trigger on the 3rd slide and some also had a trigger on the 1st slide. In a 1948 brochure, the Olds company said: Here's an instrument that feels "natural" right from the start, the result of its light weight, easy blowing and perfect balance. Of a special composition brass, the Super Trumpet is reinforced with nickel silver at all the points of wear and has the famous Super tone control band around the bell and the streamlined braces. This deluxe trumpet embodies Olds beauty of design and craftsmanship for the superb tone quality and flawless action that inspires the musician to greater artistry...$240.00 Note: The Recording ( top of the line in this catalog was $275.00 ). We compared this Super to two othes --- a 1952 Super and a 1969 Super. We weighed them and this 1949 model was the lightest weight ( as Olds said in their catalog ). Being lighter is the result of using special brass plus it is possibly thinner than later Supers. This one weighed in at 2 pounds, 2.5 ounces and the 1952 model was 2 pounds, 6.5 ounces and the 1969 model was 2 pounds, 7 ounces. As well on this particular year, the tone ring was not nickel-silver but rather brass which adds something to the tone. When we play tested the three horns together, we found this one to project the best ( louder ) and it was just a bit brighter than the other two horns. This trumpet was serviced meaning it was ultrasonically cleaned, all parts disassembled and cleaned, dents/dings removed, valves and slides checked, top cap washers were replaced and then the trumpet was reassembled and lubricated with premium valve oil and tuning slide lube and finally play tested. The valves look great, work well and compression is great on the horn! The slides all move well. The lacquer is very good on this horn which would lead one to believe that at some point in its history, it was re-lacquered. We can't guarantee that but the lacquer on this one looks too good to be original lacquer. The numbers on the valves match the serial number of the horn. The horn did come with the original Olds Guarantee and Warranty card which has the serial number in it --- a rarity for horns this old. But, this one did not come with the original case but a suitable serviceable case will be included. No mouthpiece is included.
