1952 Olds Super Trumpet - Los Angeles Model
Serial 92964

This is a very nice vintage Olds LA Studio Trumpet built in 1952 in the original Los Angeles plant in California.  The serial number 92964 indicates a manufacture date in 1952 when the Olds company was doing some of it's best work at the original Los Angeles plant.  The Olds Super was considered a professional model trumpet and a step under the Recording model, the top of the line.  And, then there was the Super Recording which only differs from this one by having a trigger on the 3rd slide and some also had a trigger on the 1st slide.

In a 1948 brochure, the Olds company said:

Here's an instrument that feels "natural" right from the start, the result of its light weight, easy blowing and perfect balance.  Of a special composition brass, the Super Trumpet is reinforced with nickel silver at all the points of wear and has the famous Super tone control band around the bell and the streamlined braces.  This deluxe trumpet embodies Olds beauty of design and craftsmanship for the superb tone quality and flawless action that inspires the musician to greater artistry...$240.00  Note:  The Recording ( top of the line in this catalog was $275.00 ).

We compared this Super to two others --- a 1948 Super and a 1969 Super.  We weighed them and this 1952 model was heavier than the 1948 model but lighter than the 1969 model ( as Olds said in their catalog ).  Being lighter is the result of using special brass plus it is possibly thinner than later Supers.  This one weighed in at 2 pounds, 6.5 ounces and the 1948 model was 2 pounds, 2.5 ounces and the 1969 model was 2 pounds, 7 ounces.

As well on this particular year, the tone ring was nickel-silver similar to the later 1969 model which some say adds to the tone.  When we play tested the three horns together, we found this one to be a bit more laid back --- being darker in tone and not as brighter as the other two horns.  This was a much more mellow sounding horn.

This trumpet was serviced meaning it was ultrasonically cleaned, all parts disassembled and cleaned, dents/dings removed, valves and slides checked, top cap washers were replaced and then the trumpet was reassembled and lubricated with premium valve oil and tuning slide lube and finally play tested.  The valves look great, work well and compression is great on the horn!  The slides all move well.

The lacquer on this one is entirely gone --- totally raw brass.  The odd color ( camouflage effect ) occurred due to the brass' reaction with the solution used in the ultrasonic cleaner.  We asked a friend why they thought this might be and the "tongue-in-cheek" reply was that the process used to create this was: "This patent pending process realigns the brass at a molecular level, selecting individual electrons and pairing them with the most resonant partners possible.  This results in a horn that is actually resonating even when in the case, so you can imagine what happens when you play it!  Two additional options are available; mouthpiece processing and matching (assures a positive link between your trumpet), and the ion alignment emitter (a portable ion wash device for your case, which assures maximum excitement of your trumpet."  We don't think so but it does add to the character of the horn!

The numbers on the valves match the serial number of the horn.  But, this one did not come with the original case but a suitable serviceable case will be included.   No mouthpiece is included.
